We’re always delighted when independent wine writers take the time to visit, taste our wines and share their thoughts. Back in 2021, wine writer Stephen Groves featured Whitehall Vineyard in an in-depth review for Great British Wine, exploring both our vineyard and a selection of our wines.
Stephen begins by highlighting how Wiltshire is becoming an increasingly exciting county for English wine. Although better known for its historic landmarks and rolling countryside, he notes that the county offers ideal conditions for vineyards, with Whitehall benefiting from its sheltered position in the Avon Valley beneath the Wiltshire Downs.
The review also shares the story behind Whitehall Vineyard and owner Peter Self, whose background in farming led him to establish the vineyard after discovering the quality of modern English wines. Stephen discusses our focus on still wines, our choice of grape varieties—including Bacchus, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Rondo—and the rapid growth of the vineyard during its early years.
When it came to the tasting itself, Stephen was particularly impressed with our Bacchus, praising its classic English character with fresh hedgerow aromas and a crisp, dry finish. He also enjoyed the elegance of the Charlotte May Rosé, while noting the balance and depth found in Nethercote Hill. His standout wine of the tasting, however, was our Pinot Noir, which he described as displaying remarkable complexity and typicity, comparing its style to classic Burgundy.
Beyond the wines themselves, Stephen also commented on the beautiful setting of the vineyard and its importance for local wildlife, describing Whitehall as a place where careful farming and nature work hand in hand.
